ÖREGTŐKÉK HÁRSLEVELŰ

2020

Péter Benedek is a third generation winemaker crafting small-batch, traditional wines in the highland wine region of Mátra in Hungary. Mátra is a continental climate region, with brown forest clay soils mixed with volcanic basalt, rhyolite and bentonite.

The Öregtőkék Hárslevelű (Hungarian: “old vine Hárslevelű”) is from the Barnatanya vineyard in Gyöngyöstarján. The vines were planted 65 years ago. We love this wine because it really expresses the Hárslevelű variety - aromatic, textured, age-worthy and bright. Here, pear, honey and tangerine on the nose are met with yellow peach, quince, and salt on the palate. The wine is waxy and supple. Fermentation was spontaneous with native yeasts in third use 500 L Hungarian, and the wine was then aged for 6 months on the lees in 500 L used Hungarian oak. Unfiltered.
